I celebrated Women’s March 2018 in the picturesque Northern California city of Chico, home to California State University, Chico. There are those who assume because Chico is a “university town,” it is a haven of Birkenstock-wearing liberals. And in many ways, the city is just that. But like most other cities and towns across our beautiful country, the place and the people cannot be categorized or described so easily. Chico is a vocal mix of conservative and liberal women and men—passionate in their views. It is the exchange of ideas that helps create a community here.
City Plaza, one of Chico’s parks, held the speakers and marchers, a sea of them. Women, men, and children, all marching together for common goals. According to the local newspaper and local TV news reports, there were between 2,000 and 4,000 Chico-ans. With a population somewhere between 85,000 and 90,000, that’s a nice turnout!
